Shopify product options are the choices a shopper makes before adding a product to cart — size, color, material, or custom inputs like an engraving line or an uploaded logo. This 2026 guide covers what product options are, Shopify's native limits, every option type available, how to add them, and the point at which a free product options app becomes the better tool.
What are product options on Shopify?
Product options are the selectable attributes on a product page. In native Shopify, every option is tied to a variant — a specific, stock-tracked combination like Blue / Large. Options define the choices; variants are the sellable results of those choices. That model is perfect for inventory, but it wasn't built for open-ended personalization.

How many product options does Shopify allow?
Shopify allows a maximum of 3 options per product — for example Size, Color, and Material. Since October 15, 2025 those options can generate up to 2,048 variants per product (raised from 100), but the 3-option cap is unchanged. Three attributes is the real ceiling most stores hit.
The variant increase made headlines, but it doesn't help the store that needs a fourth choice — say Size, Color, Material and a custom text field. There's simply no room. We break the numbers down in the Shopify variant limit guide, and cover the workaround in how to add more than 3 options.
Variants vs options: what's the difference?
A variant is a stock-tracked, sellable combination with its own SKU and inventory count. An option is any choice a customer makes — which may or may not need inventory. Personalization (a name, a date, an uploaded file) is an option that should never become a variant, because it isn't stock you count.
Getting this distinction right prevents a variant explosion. For the full breakdown, see Shopify variants vs options explained. The short version: use variants for inventory, and use options for everything else.
What types of product options are there?
Native Shopify options are essentially text-based dropdowns and swatches driven by variants. A product options app expands that dramatically. Optionify offers 17 option types, all free:
- Text input and Textarea — names, monograms, gift messages, instructions (text options guide)
- Dropdown and Select box — pick one from a menu
- Radio buttons and Checkbox — visual single or multi-select
- Switch — a toggle for add-ons like rush service or gift wrap
- Number input, Email input, Phone input — validated fields
- Date picker — delivery, appointment, or event dates
- File / image upload — artwork, logos, and photos
- Color dropdown and Image swatch — visual selection with swatches
- Range slider, Dimension (width × height with area-based pricing), and Product reference

How do I add product options in Shopify?
To add native options, edit a product, scroll to the Variants section, and add up to 3 options (Size, Color, Material) with their values. Shopify generates a variant per combination. This works well until you need a fourth option, a custom input, or add-on pricing — at which point you add an app.
Adding options with a product options app
With Optionify you don't touch variants at all. You create an option set — a reusable group of options — and assign it to products:
- Install Optionify — it's free
- Click Create option set and open the Option Set Editor
- Add options, pick a type, and add values (with optional add-on prices)
- Choose where it applies — All Products, by tag, by collection, or individual products (assignment types)
- Set the set to Active and save via Shopify's save bar
Our create your first product option walkthrough covers each step with screenshots. Options render on the storefront through a theme app embed you enable once in the theme editor.
When should I use a product options app?
Use a product options app the moment you outgrow variants: you need more than 3 options, you want personalization like custom text or file uploads, you want to charge extra for an option, or you want to show and hide options with conditional logic. None of that fits the native 3-option variant model.
Because Optionify options aren't variants, they don't consume your variant count, don't need SKUs, and don't create inventory rows. You keep Shopify variants for genuine stock combinations and hand everything else to the app — a pattern we detail in add product options without variants.
Do product option selections show up in orders?
Yes. Every option a customer selects is saved to the Shopify order as line item properties, so your fulfillment team sees the exact name, date, or file the customer submitted. Add-on charges reach checkout through a hidden companion product, so they work with Buy it Now and Shop Pay too.
