A Shopify select box option lets a customer pick one choice from a menu — like a dropdown, but custom-styled to match your theme. If you want a single-select control that looks consistent across every browser and device, this guide explains what the Select box type is, how it differs from a plain dropdown and from radio buttons, and how to set one up in Optionify, a free product options app.
What is a select box option in Shopify?
A select box is a custom-styled single-select control. The customer opens the menu and picks exactly one value, just like a dropdown — but instead of the browser's native select element, Optionify renders the control itself. That gives you a consistent, on-brand appearance across Chrome, Safari, Firefox and mobile, where native dropdowns otherwise look different on each.

Select box vs. dropdown: which should I use?
Both the Select box and the Dropdown do the same job — the customer chooses one value from a menu — so the decision is purely about styling and control:
- Dropdown uses the browser's native select control. It's lightweight and familiar, but its look is decided by the browser, so it changes between devices.
- Select box is custom-styled by Optionify. You get a consistent, themed appearance everywhere, which matters when native dropdowns clash with a carefully designed product page.
If the exact look of the control matters to your brand, choose the select box. If you just need a functional menu and don't mind the native styling, the dropdown is fine. Functionally — single choice, per-value pricing, line item properties — they behave the same.
Select box vs. radio buttons
A select box and radio buttons also both capture a single choice, but they present it differently:
- Radio buttons show every choice at once, laid out on the page. Best when you have a few options and want them all visible for quick comparison — a shipping speed, a finish, a size band.
- Select box keeps choices tucked inside a menu until opened. Best when you have many choices, or when a long list would take up too much vertical space on the page.
A rough rule: up to about five choices, radio buttons read well; beyond that, a select box keeps the page tidy.
How to set up a select box option in Optionify
- Click Create option set and name the set (e.g. "Frame style").
- Add an option and choose the Select box type.
- Enter the option label, such as "Choose a finish" or "Select your plan."
- Add each choice as a value — "Matte," "Gloss," "Brushed metal."
- Give any value an add-on price if it costs more (details below).
- Decide whether the option is required so the customer must choose before adding to cart.
- Assign the set with the right assignment method — All Products, Tagged Products, Collections, or Individual Products.
- Set the set to Active and save with Shopify's save bar.
Adding select box values with optional per-choice pricing in the Option Set Editor
Options only appear on the storefront once the theme app embed is enabled in your theme editor. If the select box doesn't show up after saving, that's almost always the reason — the troubleshooting guide covers it in one step.
Can each select box choice add to the price?
Yes. Every select box value can carry an add-on price in one of two modes:
- Fixed — a set amount, e.g. "Brushed metal (+$8.00)."
- Percent — a percentage of the product price, e.g. "Premium finish (+10%)."
When the customer picks a priced choice, the charge is applied at cart and reaches checkout through a hidden companion product — so it works with Buy it Now and Shop Pay too, not just the standard cart. See add-on pricing for how the total reaches the order. Because a select box is single-select, only one choice's price applies at a time.
Real use cases for select box options
Product finishes and materials. A furniture store offers "Oak," "Walnut," and "Painted (+$25)" as a themed select box, keeping the control on-brand rather than falling back to the browser default.
Plan or tier selection. A subscription product presents "Monthly," "Quarterly," and "Annual (−? via discount)" in a clean, custom-styled menu that matches the rest of the page.
Long single-choice lists. A print shop with fifteen paper stocks uses a select box so the list stays compact instead of pushing the Add to cart button far down the page.
Because every selection becomes a line item property on the order, your fulfillment team sees the exact choice a customer made — no guesswork.
FAQ
What is a select box option in Shopify? A select box is a custom-styled single-select control from Optionify. The customer picks one choice from a menu, but Optionify renders the styling to match your theme consistently across browsers, instead of using the browser's native dropdown.
How is a select box different from a dropdown? Both let a customer choose one value from a menu. A Dropdown uses the browser's native select control, so its look changes per device. A Select box is custom-styled by Optionify for a consistent, on-brand appearance everywhere.
Can each select box choice add to the price? Yes. Every value can carry a fixed amount or a percentage of the product price. The charge is applied at cart and reaches checkout, including Buy it Now and Shop Pay.
Do select box options create Shopify variants? No. Select box options aren't variants, so they never create SKUs or count against Shopify's 3-options-per-product limit.
Will select box choices appear on the order? Yes. The selected value is saved as a line item property on the order, along with any add-on price, visible in the order details.
