Accessories, warranties, gift wrap, priority handling — the extras a customer taps "yes" to on the way to checkout are some of the easiest revenue you'll ever add. This guide shows how to offer Shopify product add-ons on the product page with real prices, without variants and without touching your theme code.
What counts as a product add-on?
A product add-on is an optional, usually chargeable extra a customer can select on a product page, on top of the main item — a warranty for a laptop, a memory card for a camera, gift wrap for a present. It's the customer's choice, and it adds to the line price.
Before you build, scope it correctly: an add-on is not a bundle. A bundle is a fixed set of products sold together as a single package at one price. An add-on is optional and per-order. If you want optional extras on a product page, that's an add-on — and that's what Optionify does. Bundles are a different tool.
Why Shopify variants can't do add-ons
Shopify variants describe fixed versions of one product — Blue / Large, 128 GB / Space Grey. They're built for inventory combinations, not optional extras. Trying to model "add a $99 warranty?" as a variant doubles your variant count, needs a SKU, and even then it can't offer a different product as the add-on. And every product is still capped at 3 options, so warranty + gift wrap + engraving simply won't fit.
Add-ons aren't inventory combinations — they're extra choices. That's exactly what a product options app is for.
How to add product add-ons on the product page
Optionify adds chargeable add-ons as custom options that render on the product page and never become variants. It's free, and there are two ways to build them.
1. Simple chargeable add-ons (checkbox or switch)
For extras that are just "yes, add it," use a Switch (a single on/off toggle) or a Checkbox (a list where the customer can tick several). Give each one an add-on price — a fixed amount or a percentage of the product price — and it's charged when selected.
☑ Add 2-year warranty +$49.00
☑ Gift wrap this item +$6.00
☑ Priority handling +$9.00
The Switch type suits a single yes/no add-on; the Checkbox type suits a menu of optional extras a customer can combine. Both update the price live on the page.
Chargeable add-ons render directly on the product page, each with its own price.
2. Offer a real product as an add-on (Product reference)
Sometimes the add-on is an actual product you stock — a case, a memory card, a spare filter. Optionify's Product reference option type lets you link a real product from your store as an add-on choice. The customer adds it straight from the main product page, and it's carried through as a companion item at checkout.
Buying: Mirrorless Camera
↳ Add-on (Product reference): 64 GB SD Card
↳ Add-on (Product reference): Padded Camera Case
This is the honest way to upsell a genuine SKU without redirecting the customer to another page.
How do add-ons behave in the cart and checkout?
This is where a lot of options apps get sloppy, so it's worth being precise. Optionify sends the add-on charge to checkout through a hidden companion product. The practical results:
- The add-on price is collected correctly at checkout, not just shown on the page.
- It works with the standard cart and with Buy it Now / Shop Pay express checkout.
- The customer's selections are saved on the Shopify order as line item properties, so fulfillment sees exactly which add-ons were chosen.
Because the data lands on the order, your team knows to include the warranty registration, the gift wrap, or the extra product when they pack it.
Common add-on use cases
| Use case | Best Optionify type |
|---|---|
| Warranty / protection plan | Switch or Checkbox (priced) |
| Accessories from your catalog | Product reference |
| Gift wrapping | Switch (priced) — see the gift wrapping guide |
| Assembly / installation service | Switch (priced) |
| Add-on consumables (filters, refills) | Product reference or Checkbox |
| Rush / priority handling | Switch (priced) |
Pair add-ons with conditional logic to keep them relevant — for example, only show "add installation" when the customer picks a "professional install" delivery choice.

FAQ
How do I add product add-ons on the Shopify product page?
Install Optionify, create an option set, add a checkbox or switch with an add-on price (or a Product reference to link a real product), then assign it to the relevant products. The add-on renders on the product page and its charge carries through to checkout.
What's the difference between an add-on and a bundle?
An add-on is an optional extra a customer ticks on the product page — a warranty, gift wrap, an accessory — priced on top of the main item. A bundle is a fixed group of products sold together as one package. Optionify handles add-ons.
Do add-ons create variants?
No. Optionify add-ons are custom options, not variants, so they don't count against the 3-option limit, don't need SKUs, and don't inflate your variant count. Add as many as a product needs.
